Deck13’s Action-RPG ‘The Surge’ Gets a Release Date and a Brand New Trailer (VIDEO)

Deck13's The Surge

Deck13, the developer behind Lords of the Fallen, has announced an official release date for its upcoming ‘souls-like’ action-RPG ‘The Surge’. The release date, May 16 of this year, arrived via a new CGI trailer for the ‘Dark Souls with Sci-Fi’ game, featuring protagonist Warren duking it out with increasingly tougher enemies, all the while upgrading his own arsenal with parts scavenged from the enemies he has defeated. Check out the new trailer below, with the rather appropriate tagline of ‘Stronger, Faster, Tougher’:

Watching the trailer, it is easy to draw parallels between Deck13’s The Surge and certain video games and movies. For one, Warren’s exosuit, courtesy of his new employer, CREO, appears to be a more bare-bones version of the suits used in 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow, complete with a protagonist that looks a bit like what Tom Cruise would look like after a very, very long day. In regards to gameplay, while the game can be closely described as a ‘souls-like’, Warren can also target weak points and slice off enemy limbs, not unlike the gameplay featured in the Dead Space series, with the added bonus of being able to equip dismembered weapons and armor onto his exosuit.

Grow in power with The Surge’s next-gen looting system – target and slice specific limbs off your enemies in battle, then equip the weapons or armor you dismember!”

With the massive success that the Dark Souls series has enjoyed thus far, it is no surprise that more and more developers are looking to build upon the formula, while making it their own with unique gameplay twists and themes, much like what developer Team Ninja has done with their Samurai-infused souls-like, Nioh. Only time will tell how successfully Deck13 pulls it off, but you can’t argue that the premise of a futuristic souls-like game that involves exosuits and dismemberment isn’t the most exciting thing you’ve heard of all day.

The Surge is slicing its way onto the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 16 this year.
