Cyberpunk 2077: The Witcher 3 Gave Dev Team Confidence To Create The New IP

Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt RED has been on top of providing fans with Cyberpunk 2077 details over the past few months. Since June, which was after five years of nothingness, the developer showed up in full force with a trailer, 48-minute demo(which has since been unveiled to the world), and all sorts of informative goodies. That said, fans still have quite the wait before the game launches, but the dev team should have plenty to talk about in the meantime.

We recently discussed the EDGE Magazine cover that Cyberpunk 2077 is set to grace for November’s issue. Inside the installment, producer Richard Borzymowski talks about the upcoming futuristic RPG and how their previous titles, particularly The Witcher 3, helped give them the confidence they needed to dive in to Night City.

“It gave us a sense of safety in our own skills,” Borzymowski said. “Right now our environment artists are populating a level with the assets, and they are not afraid of testing out new things,” he said. “This is exactly what we need to stay open to, because personally I believe that The Witcher turned out that good – and why Cyberpunk will turn out really good – because we are not afraid of change.”

The Cyberpunk 2077 producer went on to mention how they had to dig deep when it came to the game. “It takes a degree of determination, for sure, ” he continued. “From the very beginning we were saying ‘Alright, this is huge, but this is what we want to aim for.’ As producers, we’re responsible for taking this vision and verifying the capability of the team and deciding if we have to change it structure-wise, or if we have to somehow change the content of the game to make it more flexible.

“The Witcher III wasn’t less complex, but it was complex in a different way. When we were world-building you had those big open spaces, which still had to be filled out. It’s not like it was easier or cheaper to build all those beautiful forests and meadows, but it is more forgiving. If one tree is a bit more off to the right, this is exactly how forests look. But if you put a building too far apart from a different one in the middle of a city, then this can’t really work, right? You have to fill this gap in between doing other things already. And you have to push everything.”

The complexity they speak of certainly makes sense, as the upcoming RPG is poised to feature some insane realism. With the title recently being confirmed as playable from start to finish, CD Projekt RED has a long road ahead of them, but here’s to hoping it drops for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One at some point before the end of 2020.
