Cyberpunk 2077 Devs “Want To Show The Game Industry How To Do Things”

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t exactly right around the corner, but with all of the glorious details CD Projekt RED has been revealing to fans this year, we sure wish it was. That said, the developer has been on a kick since June’s E3 event, handing out a 48-minute gameplay demo for fans’ viewing pleasure and talking about the futuristic RPG in abundance.

We’ve especially learned quite a bit of information about the game from the November issue of EDGE magazine. With Cyberpunk 2077 taking center stage as the cover story, members of the development team spoke with the publication to provide some much desired insight into the what’s going on behind-the-scenes. Quest Designer Patrick Mills expanded upon the developer’s philosophy walking into a project like Cyberpunk 2077, and in general.

“One of the things about this company has always been we want to show the game industry how to do things,” he said. “We want to change the game industry. We want to say, ‘We can do things differently, we don’t have to do things that way.’ It’s in our motto: ‘We are rebels’, right?”

“So when you’ve got other studios saying, ‘Oh, no no no, there’s nothing political here’, we say, ‘Yeah, there is,’” Mills continued. “It’s not necessarily what you’re expecting, and we’re not going to talk about exactly what we’re going to say- it’s for you to decide when you play it. But Cyberpunk is relevant to today, extremely so. To pretend like it’s not? Come on. Mike [Pondsmith, Cyberpunk 2020 creator] wouldn’t let us. Mike would throw a fit if we tried to say, ‘This is just about cool hairstyles and cool guns, that’s all.'”

Given the nature of Cyberpunk as a whole, to exclude politics from a title in the genre would be a disservice to fans. That said, CD Projekt RED knows how to tell a story incredibly well, and mixed with the realism that is expected in the upcoming RPG, we’re pretty sure they’ll pull it off.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with no release date in sight. Keep it tuned to Don’t Feed the Gamers as this story develops, and for other gaming goodness going on right now, check out the following:
