Ben Affleck No Longer Directing ‘The Batman’

Ben Affleck The Batman

In Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, actor Ben Affleck donned the cape and cowl and delivered one of the best performances of DC Comics’ Batman. Affleck will once again suit up for the team up movie, Justice League movie later this year. From there, the actor was set to co-write, star, produce, and direct the Dark Knight solo film titled, The Batman. While the actor will stay on as producer and actor, he is stepping down as director.

Entertainment magazine, Variety reports that the decision was made to the benefit of the film. In a statement regarding the change, Affleck stated:

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

Ben Affleck and DC Comics’ Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns, co-wrote the script for the upcoming film. Warner Bros. Studios and Affleck will now be searching for a new director to make sure the film is still brought to life. According to Variety, there is already a short-list of possible directors including War for the Planet of the Apes director, Matt Reeves. Earlier this year, rumors of Affleck’s withdraw from the director’s chair began when  he stated, “it’s not a set thing.”

Warner Bros. Studios is supporting their Batman actor and said in a statement:

“Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life.”

No official release date has been given for The Batman, but you can catch Ben in his bat-suit on November 17, 2017 in Justice League. What do you think of Affleck’s decision to step down as director?
