Be Careful About Baldur’s Gate 3 Pre-Orders, Larian Studios Warns
Larian Studios is finally set to bring forth Baldur’s Gate 3 later this year, with the developers detailing and showing off a nice bit of gameplay in the months since being announced. With the gloriously long-awaited fantasy RPG headed to Early Access later this month(ish), fans are surely wondering when they’ll get to begin their third journey through the Forgotten Realms. However, ahead of the upcoming release, Larian has now warned users that pre-orders for the upcoming title may not be as they seem.
Informing awaiting players on social media, studio Director of Publishing, Michael Douse warned that one might want to “be wary of preordering” Baldur’s Gate 3 at this time. The dev explained that the method of purchase still hasn’t been completely worked out, with “retail” stores, “3rd party distributors,” and even details such as “price or date” being largely a mystery with the publisher. Referencing any sites already offering pre-orders for Baldur’s Gate 3, Douse warned, “We can’t guarantee you’ll get anything from them.”
Be wary of preordering BG3 anywhere right now. We won’t have a pre-order period. We have no plans to work with retail yet, and no 3rd party distributors. Haven’t announced a price or date. We can’t guarantee you’ll get anything from them.

Elaborating on the initial post, the publishing director explained that because Larian doesn’t currently have a solid semblance of release details or retail deals, there’s no way to know if any of these third-party pre-orders may actually be redeemed. Douse admits that while some deals may ultimately end up legitimate, the studio won’t be able to offer support for any of these transactions as they currently “have no agreement” in place with stores. “I don’t think they’re actually intentionally scamming. We are probably the only major game studio that ships games through such limited channels,” a follow-up post noted.
Many of the legitimate keys are either taken from retail before they go to print, or taken directly from retail boxes. But since we aren’t working with retail for EA nor 3rd party distributors there’s nowhere for them to stock keys.

I don’t think they’re actually intentionally scamming. We are probably the only major game studio that ships games through such limited channels. They’re just optimistic. https://t.co/109FYoQ6U6

While pre-ordering Baldur’s Gate 3 may be a complicated affair, fans may still have hype for the game’s upcoming Early Access, as Larian confirmed a launch for sometime around August 2020. However, there may be even more to be excited about if a response from Michael Douse is any indication. When asked whether a “big announcement” was on the way, he confirmed that there were plans for a reveal, but stopped short of giving any further details. What exactly this may end up being is still up in the air, but it won’t likely be too long until all that omission is resolved.
