Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Will Feature Viking “Rap Battles”

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla had its world premiere earlier this week and there’s already been a wealth of information revealed for the upcoming game! Set to release during the holiday season this year, the era of Vikings return as players embark on a journey as Eivor – a viking raider and leader seeking a new home for his (or her) people in 9th century England. Along the way, Eivor will practice methods of diplomacy, battle tactics, decapitations, and even Viking rap battles.

With that out of the way, “rap battle” is just a colloquial term for a clash of wits and insults between competing individuals. During the Viking era, this was called flyting. According to an official description from Ubisoft, “Sail across the icy North Sea to discover and conquer the broken kingdoms of England. Immerse yourself in activities like hunting, fishing, dice, and drinking games, or engage in traditional Norse competitions like flyting – or, as it’s better known, verbally devastating rivals through the art of the Viking rap battle.”

Though the idea of a Viking rap battle sounds amusing and erroneous, it looks like there’s more to Viking culture than most people are aware of. In fact, historian and content advisor for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s editorial research unit Thierry Noel believes there’s a “gap between the reality of Norse society” and how most people imagine them.

“The gap between the reality of Norse society and the image we have of the reckless Viking was really interesting to me,” Noel told Ubisoft. “They were a fascinating society in terms of culture and pretty fair in the way they treated women, who had important rights at the time. It was certainly contradictory to the common image we have of Vikings.”

Suffice to say, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be as historically and culturally accurate as possible all while offering action-packed combat and new ventures within the Assassin’s Creed universe.
