Amazon Game Studios Developing Lord of the Rings MMO

Amazon Game Studios

With the Game of Thrones television series finally ending its reign as THE fantasy event for television, genre enthusiasts have been eager to see what the next big fantasy show will be. Amazon declared themselves to be a strong early contender, with their announced Lord of the Rings prequel television series for their streaming service. The company seems to be interested in spending nearly $1 billion on this new project, yet apparently this is not the only Middle Earth adventure they plan on creating. Amazon Game Studios has announced that they will be developing a Lord of the Rings MMO.

Amazon Game Studios made the big announcement about the Lord of the Rings MMO on their official Twitter account. Amazon will be developing the game in partnership with Leyou, which owns the publisher Athlon Games that first confirmed the project’s existence last September. At that time, they were the only party known to be involved with a game, but they did state that they were working with an unnamed partner to bring it to fruition.

It has already been confirmed that the game will not tie into the upcoming Amazon Lord of the Rings television series, but it will similarly be set many years before the LotR trilogy. The game will be free-to-play on PC and video game consoles, though which specific consoles has yet to be disclosed. If Leyou has proven anything with their track record on Warframe, they will be able to create a free-to-play game that balances mechanics and community well. Surely, in their earlier days, they couldn’t have imagined they’d be fighting side by side with Amazon. Now, they’re fighting side by side with a friend.
