Altered Portal Ending Explored In Latest “Did You Know Gaming” Installment (VIDEO)
When Valve released The Orange Box more than 10 years ago, it contained a game that nobody had heard of. The collection featured Half-Life 2 and both of its episodes as well as Team Fortress 2, which was all well and good, but the puzzler that was included would go on to take the gaming world by storm. With a sequel of its own, false baked goods, companion cubes, and SPAAAAAAAAAAAACE in the books, it’s time to look back at the altered Portal ending and what could have been. Needless to say, spoilers are ahead.
In the most recent installment of Did You Know Gaming, a trivia channel and series on YouTube, the host takes us through some changed endings throughout gaming in recent years. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Drawn to Life, the Portal franchise, and more are all covered in the video. Essentially, what led to the altered Portal ending was the need to make a sequel more fluid. Players of the first game might remember the ending to be a bit final, but in a revised version, we see Chell getting dragged away as if to say that the testing wasn’t over. Potential alternate Portal 2 endings are also featured in the video, including one that would have happened only two minutes into play, which can be seen below:
The above video also mentions how Hideo Kojima’s original ending for MGSV was cut, but a portion of it lives on in bonus blu-ray disc form. Drawn to Life‘s second entry’s ending was changed when it was bundled together with the first title. This was due to its incredibly dark nature. A finale so secret that the writers didn’t know about it is even present in Event[0], which is so bizarre that you’ll have to check it out for yourself.
