Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Confirm Entire Game Is Now Playable From Start To Finish
CD Projekt Red has been developing Cyberpunk 2077 for six years, and they’ve now hit a major milestone. While the game is not yet in its final perfected form, the game can be played from start to finish.
In an interview with Engadget at Gamescom 2018, producer Richard Borzymowski provided insight into the game’s creation and progress. The game’s glorious E3 trailer received some criticism from viewers, including cyberpunk author William Gibson, for being too bright. (I’m still not sure why they thought the world wouldn’t darken; the game takes place in Night City.) I believe that concerns over its first-person perspective made more sense, though just barely. As the game will feature dynamic weather, it makes sense to also feature drastic changes between night and day.
The new Gamescom trailer addresses some of those concerns by showing off Cyberpunk 2077’s darker, neon-lit side. Borzymowski explained that the day-night cycle will bring different challenges for both player and developer alike.
“We knew how to create beautiful scenery in the night in Night City, like awesome Blade Runner terrain aspects. But creating Cyberpunk as an open-world game with a day and night cycle, we knew we would have to build Night City in a fashion which will look cool in the daylight as well. This was a bigger challenge to us than night, and we just opted to go with that and make a trailer in daylight, which pushed us farther.”
Borzymowski confirmed that the game’s story is complete and can be played from beginning to end. It’s a major milestone for any title, and the only people happier than future players are the devs themselves. Arriving at this stage has provided CD Projekt Red with some level of relief.
“It gives you the answers to all of your doubts. It just feels great.”
CD Projekt Red still needs polishing and additional assets, but the framework is complete. While the Gamescom demo and trailer offered only a few changes, the developer dropped some excellent new concept art and in-game screenshots. Every new detail has only served to make us hungrier for more.
The team showed off one new asset in an updated demo. Players could try out a new katana which emitted a bullet-deflecting magnetic field. That sounds like it will be a staple for almost every player’s build.
Despite the game’s progress, we still have no idea when Cyberpunk 2077 will launch. With PAX West and the Game Awards right around the corner, let’s keep our fingers crossed for an announcement.
