Wolfenstein 3 May Feature An Entirely Different Format And Direction, Says Game Designer

Whether or not you enjoyed ripping apart Nazis and disrupting their reign in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, MachineGames has already begun dabbling into the future of the franchise. Since it released on the Nintendo Switch, the developers have reflected on the current entry’s woes and wins and most importantly what the future has in store for them. In regards to Wolfenstein 3, the studio may change up the format and its direction entirely.

Andreas Ojerfors, game designer for MachineGames, spoke to Eurogamer with an appropriate amount of secrecy. Though it can’t be confirmed whether or not a sequel is on its way, Ojerfors dodges the questions saying, “I can’t really answer that without talking about what we’re doing.” However, he can speak hypothetically, providing they decide to continue with another sequel. And it starts with more freedom of options for the gamer.

“Play freedom is for me, personally as a player and a developer, really interesting,” said Ojerfors. “I personally want to continue going down that route.”

Adding to that, MachineGames hopes to “play with the format a bit”. Though he doesn’t elaborate much on that front, he does mention that this desire for change is “not because it’s necessary”. In fact, they simply want a change of pace and there’s an abundance of options for them out there. Ojerfors continued and reassured fans that the studio won’t be stepping away from the FPS style.

We are a first-person shooter studio. That’s one of the core values and ambitions of MachineGames. Whatever we do, even if we did Tetris 2, Tetris 2 would be a first-person shooter.”

It’s unlikely news of Wolfenstein 3 will be hitting E3 2018 or anytime soon for that matter, but it seems like Bethesda and MachineGames have something sneaky up their sleeves. We’ll just have to patiently wait and see what it is they have in store.
