Kingdom Come Deliverance Executive Producer Wishes They “Had More Time To Polish The Game”

The latest RPG to come out of Warhorse Studios has been storming onto the gaming over the past couple weeks. With over a million copies sold, and the overall reaction being fairly positive, it’s safe to to say that the developer just might have a success on their hands. However, this hasn’t stopped Kingdom Come Deliverance executive producer Martin Klíma from wishing they had been able to do more.

In a recent Q&A that was posted on the company’s official forum, Klíma discusses a myriad of things, including a typical day at the studio, what it’s like to be the executive producer, and his desire for “more time to polish the game.” It was asked if he sees the title as a AAA game, to which he responded:

I don’t see KCD as competing with the likes of Assassin’s Creed or Shadow of War. We simply don’t have resources to create a game like that. I don’t view us as an indie game either, though. The trend I see in ‘real’ AAA games, like the ones I mentioned above, is toward making games more and more forgiving, better suited to the most casual and absent-minded players; they are games that in effect are ‘playing themselves’. So, you have all those different markers, prompts and handy hints that you never have to think about what to do next.”

He then goes on to describe how the game is sort of a blend between indie and AAA, saying “it is an indie game at heart – more hardcore, more demanding, more fierce – but with the visuals and production values of AAA game.” It was also during this answer that the Kingdom Come Deliverance executive producer stated “I freely admit though that I wish we had more time to polish the game before the release, that’s what AAA game deserves.”

There is no doubt that many developers share that same sentiment. With the constant burden of deadlines to meet, many rush to get a game out the door and into fans’ hands, even if everything isn’t up to standard. This isn’t to say that the titles released aren’t good, but provides a deeper look into what it takes to create something that people will enjoy. In fact, just by admitting the wish for more time only shows gamers that the teams behind their favorite titles actually care about their creations. In regards to the fans, the Kingdom Come Deliverance executive producer finished with the following:

Hi! You guys are the best fans a game could wish for. Without your support on Kickstarter and beyond, there would be no game. Truly, our game belongs to you.

I interacted with many communities over the years, and seldom did I see such mature, reasonable and supportive community. That does not mean that the community would forgive everything and put up with anything. On the contrary, you are usually well informed and clear about what you want. Above all, though, you are rational, and we can have rational discussion about the game, your expectations and our capabilities.

Thank you for this.”
