George R.R. Martin Reveals New Details on Game of Thrones Fifth Spinoff
With season seven having wrapped up and the final season set to come out in 2018 or 2019, fans are wondering what is next for the franchise. Bite-sized news has trickled down on spinoff shows being written that may or may not eventually get made. One such bit of information came directly from George R.R. Martin himself as he spoke about the Game of Thrones fifth spinoff on his Livejournal.
Much like the other projects the Game of Thrones fifth spinoff, written by Bryan Cogman and Martin himself, will be a prequel that will adapt a part of the universe. Here is what Martin had to say:
I can say that, like the other pilots, it will be a prequel rather than sequel, a successor rather than a spinoff. Bryan’s series will be an adaptation, and one that will thrill most fans of the books, I think, set during a very exciting period of Westerosi history. And I’ll be working with him every step of the way; we’re going to be co-creating the show.”
It was also noted on Martin’s Livejournal that each show, including the fifth Game of Thrones spinoff he is working on, has a pretty slim chance of being completely realized. Two or three may find their way to airing a pilot while it is possible that one might get green lit for production. Ultimately, that’s a decision for HBO, but Martin had his own words on the subject:
Much as I might love the idea, HBO is not about to become the GAME OF THRONES network… but we could possibly see two or even three make it to the pilot stage, with one series emerging on air in 2019 or 2020. And the others maybe later, if they come out as well as we all hope. Then again, maybe… but I should not speculate, you folks get WAY too excited. Truth is, no one knows. Least of all me.”
HBO programming president Casey Bloys had said it would be crazy to not consider extending the universe. With such a vast world to explore, entertaining the possibility of new shows are a no-brainer. As to what what HBO is doing or which of the spinoffs if any will be made is up in the air. Whether it’s the Game of Thrones fifth spinoff or the first, only time will tell.
