It’s been a rocky road for Ubisoft’s PvP title For Honor with policy changes, choppy gameplay, and a few other grievances since the game’s launch. With rotating seasons and a list of changes made to For Honor, the team at Ubisoft looks to be making good on their word of dedicated servers and a few other tweaks based on fan feedback.

Server stability is still a primary concern and an ongoing process, the shift towards dedicated servers has been in progress for some time now. It’s a huge shift and the team wants their players to know that such a change will take some time but promises that it will occur during Season 3 or Season 4.

Game Director Damien Kieken had this to say about the decision to push forward towards dedicated servers:

We saw that we had connectivity and stability problems, mostly on 4v4 modes, so it’s one of the things we’ve looked at and worked on a lot since the game launched. And during that process, we decided to do an analysis of the whole online infrastructure we have and compare it to other existing ones. And in the end, based on all the data we gathered … we decided to do the move and to migrate to a dedicated server technology, for many, many different reasons.”

When asked how the implementation of dedicated servers will improve the overall play experience, Keiken mentioned that,

One of them, and the main reason for us, is that we want to improve the stability of the matches on 4v4, and we want to have an architecture that is more long-term, that could help us more in the future for the things we want to do next. And then you have some very simple examples; with dedicated servers, you don’t have session host migration anymore, so there is no game pausing when somebody leaves the session. You won’t have to manage your NATs. You don’t have to check your NAT if you want to play with a friend or things like that. So it will also help greatly the overall experience of the player, from matchmaking to the game session itself, to playing with friends, and things like that.”

Seasons 3 and 4 will be kicking off shortly, with Season 3 coming just around the corner in August. Each season will last approximately 3 months each until February 2018. Since there is a lot of work left to do to make sure that the transition into utilizing dedicated servers is a smooth one, that move can be seen at any time during that time frame, but it looks like erring on the later side of that time spectrum would be more accurate.

Four new characters and maps are also on the way for the upcoming seasons, as well as new emotes, weapons, and ways to customize the player’s experience. 4v4 PvP game mode and duel tourneys are also on the way on top of the expected patches and balancing updates throughout both seasons. A new reputation level cap will also be implemented during Season 3.
