Movies based on video games haven’t had a ton of luck with fans and critics, but we as fans keep throwing money at the box offices in hopes that one day, someone will get it right. As production continues for next year’s Tomb Raider, we can’t help but to hope that the action/adventure heroine Lara Croft is given proper on-screen justice from actress Alicia Vikander.

Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider franchise have been around for decades, but the 2013 reboot of the video game series brought Croft back to life in the best ways possible, reaffirming Lara a strong and resourceful female protagonist. It looks as though Vikander is hoping to portray that as best as possible in the upcoming film.

2018’s film will take notes from the 2013 video game and send Lara Croft on her first adventure. While working a normal non-adventurous, run-of-the-mill job in London, Lara will come upon a clue that will send her in search of her assumed to be dead archaeologist father. With little to no experience, Lara must follow the clues and survive any deadly threats that come her way to uncover the mystery of her father’s disappearance.

During a recent interview, Vikander spoke on Lara’s fresh beginning as an adventurer:

“She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits, but we’ve stripped away all of her experience. She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet. She thought he was a stuck up businessperson living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning.”

Not only does Alicia Vikander believe that Lara Croft will be an strong and inspirational character, but hopes that she has the same impact that the summer box office hit Wonder Woman has in depicting on-screen heroines. After seeing the latest DC Comics inspired film, the actress said:

 “I went to the cinema and saw Wonder Woman the other day. It’s a mixture of joy and sadness pouring over me, as I was thinking, ‘Oh, my God, I haven’t seen women onscreen like that.’ And I wondered how many stories there have there been throughout the years that haven’t been told. If Wonder Woman made such an impact, which it deserves to, then we need to use ten times as much force to make some change. Because it needs to happen.”
