For gamers looking for something a little different to add to their library, it’s always a good idea to check out the least likely title. One never knows if they might stumble upon an Oscar-worthy piece to play. If a video game qualifying for an Academy Award sounds a little far-fetched, fans will be happy to know that an indie game has finally broken the mold not only for gaming pleasure, but also for short film enthusiasts as well. Everything, a dream-like experience created by David OReilly, has done just that, making this title the first video game eligible for an Academy Award. The announcement of Everything‘s qualification for an Oscar was posted on Twitter by its creator. OReilly stated, “Cool: Everything just qualified for an Academy Award, making it the first time this has happened to a game/interactive project” after receiving its Jury Prize for animation. This announcement follows up with VIS’s website posting for the Festival awards. According to the website, judges determined its qualification for an Oscar with this statement:

The Jury Prize–Animation goes to a film which, beyond being entertaining, has a strong poetic and philosophical theme. It serves a highly educational purpose, including an important political statement, that encourages to let our egos dissolve and gain a new perspective on the world.”

While it may seem strange that a video game has won qualification for a film award, keep this in mind: a special rule for the Short Film category states that while feature films must be shown in theaters, an exception allows Short Films to qualify for an Oscar if they have won certain awards. Everything falls into this category, and even comes with a mode where the game plays itself. It essentially becomes a short film in this way, since players can just sit back and watch the title unfold before them in a relaxing and mind-bending array of digital animations.
