Kingdom Hearts 3 Will Feature Two Keyblade Transformations, Says Director Tetsuya Nomura

Keyblade

When word that Kingdom Hearts 3 starting development was leaked to the gaming world, fans of the previous titles and all their spin-offs raised a collective cheer in excitement. The reveal happened at E3 2015, and it’s been a long two year wait as we are continuously teased new information about the game. Even still, a set release date has not been confirmed just yet on when we can expect to have the title in our hands (not soon enough if you ask us!). However, Director Tetsuya Nomura has been gracious enough to at least keep us posted on the progress of the game. But now, in a recent interview with Famitsu, Nomura has revealed a new bit of information: the famous Keyblade weapons will have two transformations in the game!

In the interview (which was published on Gematsu), Nomura revealed that the Keyblades have been revamped in the upcoming title:

Keyblades in Kingdom Hearts III will feature two unique transformation patterns, which players will be able to use at key moments depending on their needs. We imagine there may even be a kind of “metroidvania” aspect here as well, where certain Keyblades will be able to transform into tools that open up certain areas of the map that may have been obscured or obstructed before, revealing new mysteries or treasures. Nomura was asked about these Keyblades and their transformations specifically.

Nomura also went on to explain that the specific Keyblade transformations may be determined by which weapon the characters have:

The Keyblades we’re currently making have two transformation patterns. It should be noted that similar to the Keyblade that transforms into a tank and shield that we showed this time, there is not always a division of attack and defense. The Keyblade that appeared in the previous trailer transforms into a pair of crossbows for each hand and a bazooka. How a Keyblade transforms depends on the Keyblade.

The above screenshot had been unveiled back in February, but it’s nice to actually have some context now on what Sora is holding, exactly. With the understanding that the Keyblades have definitely improved for the upcoming title, now we really can’t wait to get our hands on this game. Hopefully Nomura and Square Enix will reveal a bit more information on the game to slake our interest, or perhaps we’ll finally get a release date unveiled soon. We can only hope, but this update is definitely making the wait that much harder!
