Though BioWare canceled their multiplayer beta test, they still wanted to give fans a peek at what they could expect. Fernando Melo, producer of Mass Effect: Andromeda, shared a screen grab of the character select menu to show fans a some of the changes. Sharing new details with a fanatical fanbase was bound to turn up something small but significant, and the fans didn’t disappoint when they discovered that amidst the roster of characters was a playable female Krogan.

Twitter User Sisona Ryder CR discovered the option for a playable female Krogan among the myriad of classes, kits, and races that will be available for players when building their multiplayer avatar. They also observed that the bronze/silver/and gold rings around the characters signifies their rarity. It is looking and sounding like a lot of new features are coming to the Mass Effect: Andromeda multiplayer arena.

If you’re new to the franchise, you may not know why a playable female Krogan is such a big deal, so let’s break it down for you. The Krogan were not portrayed as a male-only race, but rather that an event was triggered by the Turians called the genophage. This genetic mutation developed by the Salarians drastically curbed the fertility of the Krogan race. A rarity among their people are female Krogan, and though in ME 3 one emerges and is exceptionally useful, the option to play one never came of the first attempt at Multiplayer. That the option exists now is incredibly excited for players that favor MP.

While the exact options of the Mass Effect: Andromeda multiplayer are still shrouded in mystery, there are a few things we do know for sure. There is a wide selection of characters/races with some level of rarity to them. There are more choices than we had in Mass Effect 3, and with the inclusion of a playable female Krogan the excitement continues to mount as we reach the March 21st release!
