Returnal: Ascension Update Adds Co-op Gameplay, Survival Mode (VIDEO)
While the PlayStation 5 has now been made available to the public for over a year now, the platform’s library is far from the most robust ever, and even fewer experiences on the console have been made specifically for its capabilities. One of the best PS5-exclusives so far has been Returnal, Housemarque’s third-person shooter roguelike Sci-Fi game. Many have praised the game for its compelling gameplay and chilling, isolating experiences. However, many have wondered if any sort of multiplayer gameplay might come to the game in the future. Well, these fans need look no further, as the new Returnal: Ascension update brings co-op and survival gameplay modes.
Sony released a new post on their official PlayStation blog detailing the new Returnal: Ascension update and its contents. The update arrives later this month, with its main new addition being a co-op mode. While Returnal was initially designed to be a single-player experience, the development team has worked hard to now allow for players to team up with another player in the game. Players can host a public or private cycle for this co-op mode, as well as join a public cycle themselves. In this mode, downed players can also help to revive each other, though this will take some strategy to heal their teammate while evading hostile attackers. This co-op mode also means to foster help with progression, should a player get stuck on one part of the game on their own.
The Returnal: Ascension update also includes a new Tower of Sisyphus location that essentially serves as an endless survival mode, like the Nazi Zombies modes in Call of Duty. This tower is an endless fortress of levels for player to navigate and survive hordes of enemies. While there is no completion to this tower, it will challenge players to see how long and how far they can survive in this environment before succumbing to the forces of darkness. It has confirmed that this mode will keep score and leaderboards for comparing one’s achievements with their friends. Returnal has already provided some quality gaming experiences so far, but it’s nice to see that the game is only furthering its expansion and community.
