Yakuza Producer Wants To Do A Sonic The Hedgehog Game (VIDEO)
As the new generation of consoles rolls out to the world, SEGA’s release of Yakuza: Like A Dragon has proven to be one of the standouts of the debuting Xbox Series X for its over-the-top narrative and embrace of turn-based RPG sensibilities. With this latest release in the bag, all eyes are on what developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio may pursue next and it appears that SEGA’s own Sonic the Hedgehog may be a candidate if one producer gets their wish.
As part of SEGA’s current 60th-anniversary celebration, Ryu Ga Gotoku producer Daisuke Sato discussed the creative’s career, as well as what he may want to tackle in the future. When asked about which potential SEGA IP would interest him most, Sato answered with the brand’s blue speedster mascot Sonic the Hedgehog. “After all, when you hear SEGA you think Sonic. I’d like to get involved once at least,” the Yakuza producer replied. “If I were to do it, I wouldn’t do Sonic as it was. I would like to make a completely different Sonic.”
A “Completely different” take on Sonic has been put forward in the past with titles like Sonic Generations, reboots like Sonic Boom, and spin-offs like Team Sonic Racing. However, Sato’s response suggests he may have something else entirely in mind for his hypothetical Sonic adventure, but the Yakuza producer stopped short of divulging any further details. One can only imagine what type of Sonic this could unleash, but some kind of obvious crossover with the Yakuza series would undoubtedly be interesting, to say the least.
As of now, SEGA is currently at work developing a whole new Sonic the Hedgehog game for 2021, but details are light regarding the project’s specifics. In the meantime, the franchise has flourished in other avenues such as a big-screen adaptation, a sequel movie on the way, and a myriad of collaborations with other brands. The hedgehog memorably debuted as a Build-A-Bear plushie earlier this year and even made its way into battle royale title Fall Guys as a limited-time costume.
