Take-Two Interactive Explains Why There Hasn’t Been A Grand Theft Auto Movie
Video games have become a prime well of source material for Hollywood studios to turn into major motion pictures. This year saw the successful release of Detective Pikachu, and film adaptations of Mortal Kombat and Sonic the Hedgehog are already in the works. One game series that many have wanted to see adapted for the big screen has been the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Given Rockstar Games’s penchant for making their games the qualities of cinema, it has seemed like an obvious fit. Well, now, Take-Two Interactive has weighed in on why a Grand Theft Auto Movie hasn’t happened yet.
Ever wondered why there hasn’t been a @rockstargames #GrandTheftAuto movie franchise yet? Allow @StraussZelnick, Chairman and CEO of #Take2 to explain… #gaminggrill pic.twitter.com/rnyqscxRYx

As seen on their official Twitter account, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently spoke with The Wrap as a part of their Grill series. According to Zelnick, Rockstar has thought about a Grand Theft Auto film before, but there have been obstacles preventing it from occurring. When asked by The Wrap about these obstacles, Zelnick had this to say:
And that would mean we’d need to finance that motion picture. While we have the balance sheet to do it, we don’t have the corporate expertise to do it. Only a handful of people inside Take-Two have ever worked in that business. I’m one of them. But that’s not what we do for a living.”
For Rockstar, it seems that creative control is their biggest concern, with the availability of their creative team making that difficult. Rockstar’s Games already take immense resources to achieve, and adding film projects on top of that would only make things more difficult. While we probably won’t see a Grand Theft Auto film any time soon, we can still expect the high quality of Grand Theft Auto games to remain at 5 stars.
