NieR: Automata absolutely took the world by storm, with the RPG having sold over 4 million as of earlier this year. Now, it looks like the game’s creator, Yoko Taro, is poised to reveal his next big game project, which may or may not be the third game in what would then be considered the NieR trilogy.

The news comes by way of a recent livestream in which NieR: Automata’s producer, Yosuke Saito, stated that he “really wanted” to talk about Yoko Taro’s next game. Despite Saito’s heartfelt desire to talk about the project, Taro’s eccentric tendencies got the best of him, stating that “Square Enix can talk about it if they want.” Saito wasn’t one to take no for an answer, though, saying that Taro would have to spill the beans the next time they did a stream together.

The possibility of a NieR: Automata sequel has been floating around for quite some time now, with Saito bringing up his desire to work on a new entry in the series as recently as last year at PAX East. Yoko Taro, on the other hand, has been on-and-off worried that a sequel would “ruin” NieR: Automata, so perhaps he needed some convincing otherwise in order to get the ball rolling. Of course there are other possibilities, such as a sequel to Drakengard or an entirely new IP, though given the success NieR: Automata, it would be very likely to see a sequel to the game sooner rather than later. In the meantime, at least we have the Final Fantasy XIV crossover event to look forward to.

NieR: Automata is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
