Uncharted Film Script Writer Confirms It Will Be R-Rated, Naughty Dog Will Not Be Involved
In the long roller coaster that has been the development for the motion picture based on the Uncharted game series, a big relief came to fans earlier this year when Uncharted film script writer Joe Carnahan confirmed that he completed his work on the screenplay. With this good news out there, fans now had their thoughts on the content of the script. Would it stay faithful to the source material? Would it focus on a lighter or darker tone? What MPAA rating would the film intend to be assigned with its content? Well, now we have definitive answers for that last question.
A new interview with Carnahan on ComingSoon.net has shared his confirmation of the script’s R-rated content, in which the interview acknowledges the recent success of the R-rated Deadpool film and the current critical acclaim that the R-rated Logan film is garnering. Carnahan believes that these films and other successful R-rated films like those from The Matrix series have proven that studio’s beliefs in PG-13 films being more preferable in cases where possible might be faulty. As such, Carnahan is confident that his Uncharted script will compare to current and past successful R-rated films, saying:
“When I wrote “Uncharted,” I didn’t spare the rod. I wrote it the way the video game is. They swear in the game, they’re kinda foul-mouthed and I kept all that stuff intact and I definitely didn’t write it as a “PG-13” movie, I wrote it the way that movie should be written.”
Carnahan also stated that Sony and Naughty Dog let him have free reign in regards to the content of the script, and it seems that his adaptation will strive to be as faithful to the source material as possible. Also acknowledged in the interview is the similarities that the Uncharted series shares with the Indiana Jones films. Carnahan believes that Drake does not share Jones’ faith in the archaeologist community, which may be a reflection Carnahan surmised from Drake’s more cynical personality and brasher actions. What do you guys think about this R-rating confirmation from the Uncharted film script writer? What elements from the games do you hope to see in the film? Let us know in the comments below!
