Tomb Raider Reboot Casts The Wire Star As Richard Croft, Lara’s Father
According to a recent report, British actor Dominic West of The Wire fame, and more recently Showtime’s The Affair, has landed a role as Lord Richard Croft in the Warner Bros Tomb Raider reboot. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the character, Richard Croft is the father of Lara Croft and was portrayed by Jon Voight in the first live action adaptation of the video game in 2001. Interesting enough, Voight’s real life daughter Angelina Jolie was the first actress to take on the part of the young archaeologist.
West will star opposite Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) who will pick up the role of the fierce British adventurer and archaeologist Lara Croft. The original Tomb Raider game was released by Eidos (now a part of Square Enix) in 1996 and has gone on to be one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. Shifting gears back to the cinematic universe, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Paramount’s 2 previous films released in 2001 and 2003 which are also based on the game franchise grossed around $432 million worldwide.
The film’s director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) had the following to say about his approach to the cinematic franchise:
I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise.”
The yet to be titled Tomb Raider reboot, which also stars Walton Goggins (Sons of Anarchy) as the film’s antagonist along with Daniel Wu (WarCraft) who plays the part as an ally for Croft on her journey, is slated to hit theaters on March 16, 2018. Another fun little fact is that West and Vikander have acted together as father-daughter duo once before, in the 2014 film Testament of Youth.
