Studio Ghibli’s Aya And The Witch Reveals Delightful Film Stills

studio ghibli aya and the witch 1 feat

Studio Ghibli is near and dear to many people’s hearts around the globe. Even outside of Japan, the animation studio is critically-acclaimed by movie buffs and anime lovers alike. From heart-breaking, war torn narratives like Grave of the Fireflies to light-hearted titles such as My Neighbor Totoro. The latest to come from the studio is a first in their book as the first completely CG-animated project titled Aya and the Witch.

Based on the 2011 children’s book Earwig and the Witch, the upcoming film is expected to premiere on Japan’s NHK TV this Winter. There’s no word yet on when it’ll reach Western audiences, but it likely won’t be far behind. Take a look at a few stills from its development below:

Though Hayao Miyazaki will eventually step away from his iconic role as the multi-faceted co-founder, screenwriter, and filmmaker of Studio Ghibli, his son Goro has since taken on a more active role in the company. Having directed titles such as Tales of Earthsea, From Up On Poppy Hill, and the upcoming Aya and the Witch. Despite officially calling on his own retirement a couple years back, Miyazaki quickly turned around and retracted that statement thereafter, still overseeing projects like Aya and the Witch.

Aside from said film, Studio Ghibli has another project currently under development. For fans of the studio or simply old man Miyazaki himself, it may take getting accustomed to the difference in animation methods. Based on the stills however, it looks like the iconic Studio Ghibli style and expressions are still there.

Are you a fan of Studio Ghibli films? Are you excited to see where Goro Miyazaki takes the Ghibli legacy or would you rather the team stuck with the classic methods?
