Ruby Rei – A Video Game That Takes Players on an Epic Journey While Learning New Languages (VIDEO)

Twitter is a magical place with limited character usage. Sometimes you get those weird spam bots looking to hook you up with local singles, but mostly it is a place of information fast, simple, and easy to get to. While perusing our Twitter feed, I came across a tablet/mobile game by the name of Ruby Rei from Wibbu and in a world where nearly every corner of the world is accessible right from your living room, I thought this was too good not to share for those looking to expand their language know-how.

There are dozens and dozens of programs out there for people to utilise to learn a new language – Rosetta Stone being the one that usually pops up in people’s minds. But sometimes the task of learning a new language, whether for work or personal interest, can seem daunting and hardly engaging. Ruby Rei hopes to change that with an interactive means to learn right from your tablet or mobile device. Here is the game’s official synopsis according to their official website:

In Ruby Rei, players guide the eponymous Ruby as she travels across an unknown world on her mission to save her friends and get home. Explore a landscape filled with angry gods, confused warriors and depressed aliens as you build relationships, solve communication breakdowns and use your new language skills to connect with others.”

I’ve recently just found this myself, so this isn’t a review – but one will definitely be on the way. Personally, stumbling upon this game was perfect timing. When I was younger, I taught myself Latvian for some strange, obscure reason I can’t really remember now. Living in New Orleans, French was also the language to learn growing up. As I’ve moved and grown, I’ve fallen out of touch with languages other than my native tongue and have been tampering with the idea of learning Italian and Spanish, even Polish because of where I live. I downloaded a few apps – and they were interesting, but not enough to keep me engaged in the process because of other everyday stresses. Being a gamer, Ruby Rei is definitely more my speed. Here’s an excerpt directly from their app page to see exactly what you’re in store for:

Explore a landscape filled with confused warriors, angry gods and mysterious aliens as you build relationships, solve communication breakdowns and use your new language skills to connect with others. There are no tests, no exercises, no grammar lessons, no vocabulary lists to learn… just an epic experience in a mysterious new world.

– Embark on an epic adventure.
– Beautifully crafted art-style.
– Learn as you play! No tests, no exercises… just pure game!
– 4 contextualised foreign-language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
– Beginner and Intermediate Spanish.

At this point and time, Ruby Rei is for Spanish, English, and Portuguese, but more languages are estimated to drop with Mandarin coming available this Summer. The game launched this March and is available in the Apple Store right now – and as an added bonus, it’s completely free! So if you’re in the market to learn Spanish or Portuguese, or just want to check it out for future expansions later, hop on over to the link above and see what’s in store yourself!
