Ren & Stimpy Reboot Planned For Comedy Central

Ren & Stimpy

90’s kids rejoice! Ren & Stimpy is making an official comeback in a “reimagined” series that ViacomCBS has picked up. According to The Hollywood Reporter ViacomCBS is the parent company of Comedy Central, and has done other adult animation revisions to shows like Beavis & Butt-head and Jodie, which was a spin-off of Daria. The show’s reinvention was greenlit by Chris McCarthy, the President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group.

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” said Chris McCarthy. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South ParkBeavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”

Ren & Stimpy was originally premiered on August 11th of 1991 on Nickelodeon and was created by John Kricfalusi. The inital airing of the show lasted for five seasons and totaled fifty-two episodes with ninety-three segments. The show followed the titular characters Ren, a chihuahua who was mildly unstable and Stimpy a cat who was slightly dense through darker themed humor, more adult related jokes and the occassional sexual innuendo bringing a bit of shock value to other children’s cartoons of the time.

Nickelodeon will be overseeing the production of the new series in tandem with teams from MTV Studios. This is the latest push by the Comedy Central to offer more adult animation. Other programs under that particular genre that can be found on the station are King of the Hill, Rick and Morty and Bob’s Burgers.

The show was given the spin-off treatment in 2003 with the premiere of Ren & Stimpy “Adult Party Cartoon” on Spike which only released three episodes before it was removed from the line up. To this day most people know the song “Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy” that was released two years after the first episode aired.
