Rage 2 Doesn’t Have Multiplayer, But Features “A Social Component”
During Bethesda’s QuakeCon 2018 keynote, fans were given another look at Rage 2. A collaborative effort between id Software and Avalanche Studios, the upcoming sequel is set to expand upon the first entry with more destruction and explosions than ever. That said, it looks like players might be flying solo while getting their rage on, as the title does not feature “your typical multiplayer.”
In a recent interview, id Software studio director Tim Willits shed a little light on the multiplayer aspect of Rage 2. “We will have a social component but it’s not your typical multiplayer,” he said. “We’re not quite ready to talk about it but we understand community is important, and we understand connecting with other gamers is important. But there’s not a true what I call ‘classic’ multiplayer, so you’re not running around together with your friends, because we feel we have enough hours of entertainment for your money. We feel like we have a good offering.”
Anyone who enjoys blowing things up in games knows that there is more fun to be had in groups, which makes this news a bit sad to hear. It will be interesting to see what they have in store with that “social component.” Only time will tell. Post-launch content, however, will be present. Willits went on to say:
Our way of thinking is making the tail of the game longer. Our fans put hundreds of hours of their lives into the game and we want to give them an experience worth their time. We have plans to do all sorts of things: free plus paid updates and obviously some dynamic elements.”
Willits also expanded on the developer’s choice to not use loot boxes in the game. When asked if microtransactions were going to be included, Willits said, “Ah… I don’t know yet. You need to be careful when you say things – like ‘loot boxes’. ‘Argh oh my god loot boxes!’ We won’t have loot boxes but yes we are trying to figure out how it will work.”
“It’s a balance,” he continued. “You don’t want people to feel like you’re trying to chase them for money but you want to give people the opportunity to have the experience they want and to extend that tail, so we’re still working some of those plans out.”
