PUBG Developer Files Lawsuit Against Copycat Game Creator
PlayerUnknown’s Battleground broke records on concurrent player streaks and sold millions of copies, which is especially true even after it officially left its early access stage. They became so wildly popular on various platforms that the creators developed an official mobile application for iOS devices. They’ve made a fair name for themselves, but it seems like they’re intent on keeping it that way. PUBG developer, Bluehole Studio, is reportedly suing copycat game creators for eerily similar titles.
In an attempt to shut down competition, the profoundly popular game is heading after the developer for such mobile games as Rules of Survival and Knives Out based on copyright and trademark infringements – NetEase. Suffice to say, it’s easy to see why the PUBG developer is going after them.
The images above show comparison details between PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds against Rules of Survival and Knives Out respectively. Aside from aesthetic similarities, RoS even makes references to the coined winning phrase “winner winner, chicken dinner” on advertisements. If that doesn’t scream blatant trademark violations, we’re not sure what else would. Of course, NetEase denied the alleged violations.
The PUBG developer took to the federal court in the state of California to make an official complaint, one that reads 155 pages long. Furthermore, they ask that NetEase remove “each and every version of the games Rules of Survival, Knives out, and similarly infringing games from distribution and to cease developing and supporting those games.”
For now, it’s unclear how this problem will pan out for Bluehole Studio and company. It’s up to the federal courts to clear up this mess. What do you think of NetEase and their mobile games Rules of Survival and Knives Out? Do you think this is a case of unlawful infringement or should they just turn the other way?
