PlayStation 2 Life-Support Declared Dead By Sony

PlayStation 2

The PlayStation 2 – a powerhouse of a console throughout its generation. One that players still find comfort in with some of their absolute favorite titles. The 18-year-old device is the best-selling console of all time, and while that is an impressive feat, all good things must come to an end.

That said, Sony has officially announced that life-support for the PlayStation 2 has been declared dead. Ending on the last day of August, the company no longer offers maintenance support for the console. Instead, those wishing to keep their nearly 20-year-old systems going will either have to become handy with technology themselves, or find some trusted third-party technicians.

According to IT Media, Sony Japan offered PlayStation 2 owners one last chance to have their consoles fixed. In order to do so, they would have had to have been registered online by August 31st. Any system that arrives at the PlayStation Clinic in Iwate Prefecture after the September 7th deadline will not be serviced. Sad times, gamers, but as technology advances, even the giants of yesteryear must fade.

This, of course, isn’t to say that players around the world won’t keep the spirit of the console alive. Collectors will surely ensure that their systems are in pristine condition for years to come, as will people looking to expose future generations to some of the classics. With only three consoles achieving over 100 million sold, the original PlayStation and the Nintendo Wii being the other two, it’s safe to say that the PS2 has cemented itself in video game history.
