New Mutants Film Spin Off is a “Full-Fledged Horror Movie”, Says Director Josh Boone
Now, with the release of Logan, 20th Century Fox is saying goodbye to the original X-Men cast and looking to the future of the X-Men movie franchise. The prequel X-Men films, starting with First Class, meant to act as the new “core” X-Men films and now the studio has been pondering how to differentiate the other X-Men spin-off projects that are in production. Deadpool has found success as a very self-aware, hyper-violent comedy and now it appears that they may have decided on a direction for their New Mutants film to set it apart from the other X-Men movies.
Entertainment Weekly has published a new, exclusive report that shares new details about the New Mutants film given by director Josh Boone, such as the confirmation that the film would indeed be a horror. “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains,” Boone describes. “We’re trying to do something very, very different.” The movie has already cast Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik. So, with such young actors involved, the project is already showing signs of paying homage to classic horror flicks by putting a young group of characters at the focus.
Boone also appears to have been a fan of the New Mutants storyline since it first made its debut, his memory of first reading it when he was younger describing it as “a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes.” With a fan so dedicated and passionate about the story, it would certainly be reasonable to have hope that he will guide this project well.
