Ridley Scott Takes the Helm of Alien’s Future – Neil Blomkamp’s Alien 5 Dead in the Water

For fans of the Alien franchise, Ridley Scott has a few words regarding the Alien series and its future. Alien provided the foundation for Ridley’s career and when he resumed his involvement with Prometheus, it had long time fans excited to see him in action back within the world of Sci-Fi. The original plan was for a set of sequels to follow up Prometheus’ release, but Ridley’s schedule became too hectic with movies such as The Martian and Exodus: Gods and Kings. This scheduling conflict opened up the door for other interested filmmakers, and one Neil Blomkamp rose to the challenge. Sort of.

Ridley was apparently not impressed with the storyboard put forth from Blomkamp after he released concept artwork for his Alien 5 film that would have been a sequel to the original film. Alien 5 was then set into motion, with 20th Century Fox giving the production green light. This in turn spurred Ridley to begin work on Alien: Covenant, the sequel to Prometheus, and have the film wrap up before the proposed Alien 5 movie.

In a recent interview with Allocine (translation provided by CBR), Ridley breaks the silence on Blomkamp’s project confirming suspicions that the temporary hold on Alien 5 means a much more permanent stop.

There was never a screenplay, just an idea that evolved into a pitch of 10 pages … I was always just a producer, but it didn’t go any further because Fox decided that it didn’t want to do it.”

Veterans of Alien, including Sigourney Weaver, were excited for Blomkamp’s vision stating that it was going to “break a lot of new ground” and marry the foundation of this franchise to a present day audience. It looks like those excited for the next evolution from the District 9 filmmaker are going to be left wanting but Ridley’s Alien: Covenant is garnering a lot of positive reaction with a plethora of teasers, plot revelations, and casting choices.
