Man Depletes Family Life Savings on Twitch Donations – Completely Broke
The Twitch donations feature has given streamers a chance to turn a passion into a dream job. Entertaining the masses at the helm of their keyboard or controller while awaiting the trickle of donations to roll in and keep them streaming. For some, much like gambling, the urge to support and catch the attention of one’s favorite streamers might be too much to bear.
The Twitch donations system is an evolving one that finds ways to encourage fans to make donations. The feature apparently worked well for a 28-year-old husband and father. The man reportedly donated his family’s entire life savings to streamers on Twitch and hid it from his wife until they were flat broke.
The wife found out when attempting to purchase groceries, and rightly upset, took to Reddit to ask for advice. According to the wife, their account history reflected many Twitch donations. On one day, through various transactions, he had spent $4,500 with some of those reaching $1,000 in a single transaction. At that rate, it had become apparent where their $38,000 in savings had gone.
The husband was defensive on the phone when confronted, saying the money in the account was his to begin with and hung up. While it is true that when they had their child and he became the sole provider, the savings had been jointly accumulated until that point (about 6 months). The wife was later told by a friend of the family that the husband had crashed on their couch for the night saying that he “had a bad fight” with his wife.
Reddit gave an outpouring of opinion on the subject. One Redditor suggested getting in touch with Soldier and Family Services because the husband is in the Army. Another suggested digging into their credit history to see if he was running up credit cards on the side. Regardless of what is done next, it is clear that this man has a deeper problem that needs sorting if his family is going to get back on track.
It has become quite easy in the digital age to spend on all sorts of things. An addictive personality with the right kind of on-line environment could find themselves easily walking this same road. Unfortunately, in some cases, the impact of irresponsible spending can hit those around us when we take it too far.
