Horror Manga Creator Junji Ito Discusses Involvement With Cancelled Silent Hills Game
When it was revealed that Hideo Kojima was teaming up with Guillermo del Toro to create Silent Hills at Konami, fans could not contain their excitement. However, when that project was axed, the disappointment was immeasurable. That said, horror manga creator Junji Ito recently discussed his involvement with the title, probably making fans even sadder than they were.
Ito is probably best known for the likes of Uzumaki or The Enigma of Amigara Fault, but as it turns out, he was also set to design the monsters that would have been featured in Silent Hills. Unfortunately, it didn’t pick up steam and Ito’s involvement with the project boiled down to a free ticket to see Pacific Rim and a night of karaoke. Ito recently spoke at the Toronto Comics Art Festival, and thanks to a transcription from Twitter user “MinovskyArticle,” we know what was said.
Junji Ito asked about Silent Hills.
“I don’t know anything about games. I don’t play them. I am afraid if I get into them I’ll miss deadlines. I have never played Silent Hill. I have known Hideo Kojima for 20 years. He is a nice older brother type.”

Kojima and Del Toro approached Ito around the time Pacific Rim came out. “I told them I know nothing about games. Kojima told me I would be fine. Del Toro gave me tickets to Pacific Rim. It was excellent.”

“Kojima was at Konami back then. I came to a meeting and Del Toro hugged me. It turns out Del Toro is a big gamer. Del Toro wanted the game to be in one location and keep the horror in the player’s face in that way.”

“Once the Silent Hills meeting was over, we went to karaoke. I didn’t hear anything after that. I heard that the plan got scrapped through outside sources. I have seen Kojima and Del Toro since. I never started designing monsters. Nothing exists. There are no roughs or sketches.”

It’s definite unfortunate that nothing ever came of the Silent Hills game, outside of the P.T., but here’s to hoping something with the franchise happens in the relatively near future.
