IGN Acquired Humble Bundle In Move To Grow Charitable Organization

IGN Acquired Humble Bundle

It may seem a bit out of left field to hear that IGN acquired Humble Bundle, but that is just what the companies announced on Friday to fans and followers. In some ways, the charitable digital distributor and the game and entertainment group would make a smart match. Some, however, may think there is a conflict of interest there. Here is what Jeffrey Rosen, co-founder and CEO of Humble Bundle had to say about the choice in a recent blog post:

We chose IGN because they really understand our vision, share our passion for games, and believe in our mission to promote awesome digital content while helping charity. I can’t think of a better partner than IGN to help Humble Bundle continue our quest.”

For some backstory leading up to when IGN acquired Humble Bundle, the company was founded in 2010. Jeffrey Rosen and John Graham started the charity focusing on a “pay what you want” standard that put the power into the hands of the buyer. In may of last year the company launched their first Humble Indie Bundle to join the ranks of other bundles the company has created.

IGN Acquired Humble Bundle

Game bundles – being a big deal for the charity – is one of their larger sources of donations. Their operations include monthly subscriptions, game publishing, and a digital storefront. While the premise may have seemed dicey at its advent, it has raised over $106 million in charitable donations in exchange for bundles. It is no secret why IGN acquired Humble Bundle given the information, but some fear that the company may use the deal as a means to corner certain editorial coverage.

The company plans to continue their independent operation, however, and is only gaining support from IGN. Here is what IGN Executive Vice President and General Manager Mitch Galbraith had to say to Polygon about their integrity:

Editorial integrity is something we take very seriously at IGN, and I am confident that we will strike the right balance when it comes to our coverage of Humble Bundle and the games they sell. Our readers and customers have always come first — and that won’t change.”

The financial terms of the deal have not, as of yet, been disclosed. Given that IGN acquired Humble Bundle only a few days ago, it is uncertain if that information will come to light and what the acquisition means for the future of both companies. It seems, however, that both companies are looking towards fostering a growing charity into something that will do a lot of good for the future.
