Gearbox Responds To Troy Baker’s Borderlands 3 Claims
The disagreement between Gearbox Software and voice actor Troy Baker has been in the public eye since it was learned that Baker wouldn’t be returning to fill the role of Rhys in Borderlands 3. The studio and the actor have gone back and forth a little bit over the past six months, but Baker recently noted that the reason behind him not returning was because Gearbox didn’t want to go union, and the actor simply can’t do that as he is union.
However, in a recent statement to IGN, Gearbox has responded to the Borderlands 3 claims from Baker. “Troy is an exceptional talent and we were disappointed that he declined to partner on Borderlands 3 after being offered the part,” they said. “We wish him the best and hope he knows the offer to collaborate with him still stands. Gearbox is a Texas company and is bound by Texas law – which means that a person cannot be denied employment because of membership or non-membership in a labor union or other labor organization.
“As a talent-owned and talent-led organization, Gearbox enthusiastically works to ensure our pay and working conditions meet or exceed union standards. We also believe strongly in hiring local voice actors whenever we can which is why we’re thrilled Troy’s career really took off after working with us.”
Despite having nearly four times as many acting credits pre-Tales From the Borderlands as opposed to after, Gearbox feels that they really kickstarted Baker’s career. In any case, the actor isn’t in Borderlands 3, and while that is a bit disappointing, it may be for the best.
