GameStop CEO Michael Mauler Has Resigned, Effective Immediately
It’s nothing new when higher-ups at large corporations step down or get shifted around. However, when some unexpectedly resigns, it makes people wonder what is going on. This is especially true for GameStop CEO Michael Mauler, who just stepped down from the position after only having been in it for three months.
The news came this morning from CNBC, who also reported that the departure doesn’t seem to be due to any sort of fraud. It is also noted that the GameStop CEO stepped down for “personal reasons,” but is not entitled to any sort of severance package. This is likely because he only held the position for such a short amount of time.
JUST IN: GameStop says its CEO, Michael K. Mauler, has resigned for "personal reasons, effective immediately" and appoints Daniel A. DeMatteo as its interim chief executive officer. GameStop shares are currently halted for news pending. https://t.co/baADHRuo34

As seen in the tweet above, GameStop co-founder Daniel DeMatteo will act as interim chief executive officer until the board is able to find a permanent replacement. DeMatteo, who is also an executive chairman and a director for the company, had this to say:
Given my tenure and familiarity with the company and our associates, it’s a natural step for me to assume this role and guide the business at this time while the board searches for a permanent CEO.”
Mauler took over as CEO back in February, three months after Paul Raines stepped down from the position for health reasons. Some of you may remember the unfortunate passing of Raines back in March. That now makes it twice that the position has changed hands over the past five months, leading many to wonder who will be the next CEO.
Whoever steps into the role will have to be comfortable with how the market is changing. GameStop has certainly experienced a bit of trouble as gamers shift toward digital-based content that can easily be downloaded without having to leave the house. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the popular video game retailer, but keep it tuned to Don’t Feed the Gamers as this story develops.
