First Look at Phantom Dust on the Xbox One From Xboss Phil Spencer

The upcoming title Phantom Dust that is slated for the Xbox One is actually a remake of the action strategy game that came out in 2004 (2005 in North America) designed by Yukio Futatsugi. The game itself was set in a post-apocalyptic environment on Earth putting the player in the nameless shoes of the protagonist that must go from human outpost to human outpost to gain intel on what happened in the past. Everyone the player encounters suffers from a form of amnesia and piecing this puzzle together becomes a daunting, but imperative, task.

Overall, the title was a success – so much so that in 2014 at E3, Microsoft announced that they would be bringing an optimized remake to this generation of consoles – to the Xbox One. Since then, word has been very scare on updates for the remaster, but the Xboss Phil Spencer is always there to pull that string of interest:

The above screenshot is technically the first look at the upcoming Phantom Dust, a screenshot from the project that many didn’t think would even happen. The studio that was initially responsible for bringing Phantom Dust to the current generation ended up being shut down, which fueled the rumors that this project was no longer on the table. Team Xbox insisted that the this title was not in fact cancelled, but lack of any information left little room for anything other than doubt.

That doubt simmered down in 2016 when Shannon Loftis of the Microsoft crew told Geoff Keighley not to worry, that progress was well on the way:

We’re using the original assets from the Phantom Dust that was released by Microsoft Japan in 2003. We are updating key parts of it. We are updating it with modern Xbox Live … For those that haven’t heard of it, this game is a collectible card game that’s wrapped up in an action RPG. The game, when it came out, was very of its time.”

The game itself is set for a 2017 release, though specific details have not been confirmed at this time. Phantom Dust will be available on the Xbox One as well as PC through their Play Anywhere program. What are your thoughts on the remaster?
