Fallout 76 On Nintendo Switch Just Isn’t Doable, Says Bethesda
With about two weeks remaining before Bethesda’s online-based West Virginian Wasteland experience is released, fans are gearing up to explore, build, and fight their way to inevitably being nuked (probably). That said, while many platforms are receiving the game, one will continue forth without Fallout 76: Nintendo Switch.
Even with the likes of Skyrim, Wolfenstein II: The News Colossus, and DOOM already having made their way to the portable console, Bethesda doesn’t think it’s doable to give Fallout 76 the same treatment. During a PAX Australia panel, Pete Hines confirmed that a Switch port of the upcoming adventure just won’t be happening. “The Switch is something I can say with certainty that it’s a part of every conversation with every dev we have now about what we’re doing going forward because we consider it to be a viable platform,” Hines said.
“If the game will work on it, we want it to be on every platform possible,” he continued. “Fallout 76 is not because it just wasn’t doable. But honestly, there is no game in development that we haven’t had a conversation about [bringing it to Switch]. ‘Does this work on the Switch, do you have a plan for the Switch?’ It’s not a mandate. Everything we do has to be developer-led, but it’s something we want to make sure is on folks’ radar.”
“I enjoy us being seen as the third-party leader in terms of supporting Switch. People go, ‘Hey, you’ve got a lot more stuff [on Switch] than this publisher or that publisher.’ That’s what I want Bethesda to be known as. We’re guys who will take some risks.” While one of those risks won’t be Fallout 76, Hines was sure to add that a major concern for Bethesda is the profitability of its products, and that they will continue their support for Big N’s on-the-go console with the release of future titles on the platform.
This includes the likes of Doom Eternal, The Elder Scrolls Legends, and the “next Wolfenstein.” Whether that means Youngblood or another entry altogether remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see what the future holds. As for Fallout 76, it will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 14th.
