Death Stranding: Hideo Kojima Explains The Game’s Open World
There is still plenty of mystery that surrounds the upcoming PlayStation 4 title from Kojima Productions. We’ve already gotten a taste of what is to come from the likes of the star-studded cast, the beautiful visuals, and the overall bizarre tone that Death Stranding presents, but director Hideo Kojima himself recently discussed the open world aspect players will be jumping into.
During a recent interview with 4Players (via ResetEra), Kojima touched on how working on Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain has made it essentially impossible to go back to anything that isn’t open world. “Well, after experiencing an action game in an open world, you can not just go back to other things,” the Death Stranding director said. “That’s what I thought. Because of the interactivity. Of course, there are other ways to make a game. A linear game for example. However, I can not go back after having had the experience of having a large-scale world in a game.
“The problem, however, is the technology. Of course it is technically difficult to create an open world. The player has the greatest possible freedom in an open world. Therefore, you are never really sure what the player will do. In this context, storytelling in an open-world game is the biggest challenge. As there is more and more freedom, it means that the story sometimes gets in the way of a distraction.”
He then went on to say that the same problem won’t arise this time around where the story fades after the world opens up. According to Kojima, when it comes to Death Stranding, “This time was the biggest challenge and the biggest obstacle: It’s an open world, but at the same time we do not want to reduce the importance of the story, so fans of Hideo Kojima games will not be disappointed.”
Death Stranding will be arriving on November 8th for PlayStation 4. Keep it tuned to Don’t Feed the Gamers as this story develops, and for other gaming goodness going on right now, check out the following:
