Death Stranding Creator Hideo Kojima Doesn’t “Understand” His Own Game

Death Stranding Creator Hideo Kojima Doesn't "Understand" His Own Game

With Death Stranding finally on the cusp of being released, many fans have begun to put the game’s puzzle pieces together with the help of the latest batch of newly revealed footage. Unfortunately, the same can’t also be said for creator Hideo Kojima, who has managed to out-Kojima himself into making a video game he doesn’t quite understand, because it’s Hideo freaking Kojima.

Kojima-san recently sat down with the folks over at Financial Times to discuss Death Stranding and its impending release, letting slip some understandable confusion about the game as a whole. “Death Stranding… even now, I don’t understand the game,” he admitted.

Its world view, gameplay, they are all new. My mission is to create a genre that does not currently exist, and which takes everyone by surprise. There is, naturally, a risk in that…”

Part of said risk is apparently losing a little bit of the big picture while working in the dirt to get Death Stranding built up from scratch. To that end, he also likened creating video games to being the ultimate form of craftsmanship. “There are stories being told [in cinema] that my generation may find surprising but which the gamer generation doesn’t find weird at all,” Kojima said. “If you take something that looks like a banana and give it the title ‘apple’, that works as art. But it doesn’t apply to games. We are making things that are interactive. A banana has to be edible after you peel the skin. Cars have to be drivable. For games to be interactive and to deliver the enjoyment, there has to be a reality where there are lots of people backstage making it all happen. That is us – a kind of art-driven service industry.”

Here’s hoping the banana that is Death Stranding will be perfectly edible when it releases on November 8 for PlayStation 4.
