Crusader Kings 3 Comes To Consoles In March (VIDEO)

Crusader Kings 3

Released back in 2020 to the delight of strategy game fans, Crusader Kings 3 brought the series’ grand medieval premise into a new generation, touting its most streamlined and expansive entry yet. As with previous games, the threequel is built upon an epic and wide-scoped campaign, allowing players to inhabit thousands of leaders from hundreds of regions in the Middle Ages, and navigate their personal complexities such as relationships, religious beliefs, and even stress levels.

The game’s sheer scale and open-endedness make for an experience very much suited for PC, but the madmen at Lab42 Games and Paradox Interactive are now pursuing a console version set to release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on March 29th. Announced in the video below, Lab42 recounts the massive challenge as well as opportunity in bringing Crusader Kings 3 to console, especially as very few grand strategy titles ever make their way to the platform in the first place.

Calling the endeavor an “adaptation” rather than a straight-up port, heavy streamlining and UI redesign looks to have taken place for Crusader Kings 3’s shift to consoles, as the mosaic of menus present on the PC version are now able to be navigated with a simple controller. As game director Alexander Oltner plainly put, “There’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to plot the downfall of an emperor or guide your dynasty to become kings of Europe from the comfort of your own sofa.”

As per the PS Blog, the PlayStation 5 version of Crusader Kings 3 features some unique support for the console’s DualSense controller. Design director Justin Forrest confirmed a number of “key in-game events” like music and map terrain utilizes subtle haptic feedback to add a layer of ambiance to the experience, while pushback from adaptive triggers will be used to portray a character’s given stress levels. Over on the Xbox side of things, Crusader Kings 3 is confirmed to be coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one of release.
