Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Spec Ops Survival Mode Is Timed PS4 Exclusive
By the looks of what’s been shown off so far, Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot looking to be a departure from the original game in a number of ways. We’ve seen a look at the game’s stunning graphics and mature subject matter depicted in a recent story trailer, as well as a cross-play-enabled multiplayer beta which recently saw its conclusion. However, it appears that not everything will be different for the new installment, as Modern Warfare’s Spec Ops will have a mode exclusive to PlayStation 4 players for an entire year.
Revealed in the game’s newest trailer, Special Ops’ horde-style Survival Mode was shown to be specifically set aside to “Play First On PS4,” the timed-exclusivity lasting from launch to October 1st, 2020. This development is part of the game’s continued arrangement with Sony, having prioritized quite the bevy of content for the console over the last few Call of Duty installments. “Most” of Modern Warfare’s considerable post-launch content was confirmed to be available simultaneously across all platforms, though it appears PS4 will still get early access through at least one avenue in the Special Ops Survival Mode.
As Survival has been a popular mode of the Modern Warfare series since MW3, a year-long lockout for both Xbox One and PC is sure to be a cause for disappointment among many players. In an attempt to explain the limited PS4 exclusivity, Infinity Ward Narrative Director Taylor Kurosaki responded to fan concerns over Twitter, confirming Survival represents only “a sliver of Spec Ops” while the remainder of add-on content will still go out to all platforms at once.
You can play Spec Ops and every new bit of content we drop, day one. The only timed exclusivity is Survival, which is a sliver of Spec Ops.

In a follow-up tweet, Kurosaki expressed the studio’s desire to preserve trust and “have an open dialogue” with players regarding the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. He hinted at the “complicated decisions” behind the game’s timed-exclusivity, and that any say-so about said decision lied well above the team’s “pay grade”–likely referring to the Infinity Ward’s parent company of Activision. Kurosaki concluded his social media post assuring, “we want what’s best for all our players.”
It’s all good. We have tried our best to have an open dialogue with our players from day one. We understand letting that trust down. These are complicated decisions that are above our pay grade. Please know we want what’s best for all our players.
