Ruby Rose’s Batwoman Gets First Image Reveal

Fans of DC Comics television franchises are getting their first look at Ruby Rose as Batwoman. The network plan to air a show by the same name with the character first appearing in Arrow this December. Of course, there is a lot more to this character than just a fancy costume and fiery, red hair.

Rose appears in the image below as Batwoman, aka Kate Kane, the cousin of Bruce Wayne. She marks the first prominent character to be openly queer, the first gay member of the Wayne extended family (orphans included), and the first character of that sexuality to have their own series with DC Comics.

As seems to happen with the Wayne family, Kate Kane has a dark past that leads her to become Batwoman. When her mother and sister are kidnapped and murdered by gunmen before intervention from outside forces, leading her to join the military in her mother’s honor. When she is asked to lie about her sexuality to stay in the military, Kate refuses and turns to a life of partying.

While Kate wanders, troubled and lost, she eventually runs into Batman and is inspired to adopt her own persona: Batwoman. The CW show will also mark the first queer character to lead a DC show, and the first in the title role, continuing her legacy. The titular show is expected to air sometime in 2019.
