The Banner Saga 3 Launches Kickstarter for Last Game in the Trilogy (VIDEO)
After teasing the idea a few months ago, developer Stoic Studios have revealed their plans to complete the Banner Saga story with a third and final entry in the viking-themed RPG series. The independent studio announced the game along with a Kickstarter campaign to help raise money for the project.
To fund The Banner Saga 3, Stoic is hoping to raise $200,000 to provide “additional features” to the game. The studio added that the project will only be partially funded by public donations, with the rest being handled by Stoic themselves.

The original Banner Saga came about after former-BioWare developers Alex Thomas, Arnie Jorgensen and John Watson formed Stoic Studios to pursue their own projects. The game was launched and successfully funded on Kickstarter in only a day’s time back in 2012. While the first, and later second game, in the series was published Versus Evil, they are not returning for the series’ final game. Stoic co-founder John Watson acknowledged this in statement:
“We’re proud to be indie, and despite the stellar support we get from our publisher, Versus Evil, we’re not taking any outside funding to bring this series home, we’d love Kickstarter support to add additional features that are simply beyond our current budget.”
Stoic is driving to make the game a “worthy, climatic conclusion” to the series, The studio’s ambitious goal is supported by The Banner Saga 3‘s official description:
“In Banner Saga 3, players will embark on their final journey beyond the wall of Darkness to traverse the world unlike anything encountered in previous sagas. The beautifully hand drawn Viking role-playing adventure will once again test the player’s resolve through epic tactical battles against deadly adversaries where a player’s choice directly affects their personal journey. The lives of your clansmen and their families have never been more significant than in the final act of the series.”
The team’s reasons for crowdfunding the project is to bring back many elements from the previous games, as well as increasing the scale and quality of the storytelling.
“To produce a game of this quality will not be cheap,” Stoic cofounder Arnie Jorgensen said. “We’d love more cutscenes, more animations, boss fights, and basically more time to do it right.”
Stoic is also looking to bring back composer Austin Wintory to write the score for the Banner Saga threequel. This would be his third time making music for the series.
“Everyone that has played Banner Saga knows how important the score is to the emotion and mood of the game. This world renowned composer has been with us from the start and will be with us to the end, but he’s fighting battles to make our current budget work. Let’s give him the means to make it everything he knows it should be!”
The Banner Saga 3 has no announced release date as of yet. At the time of writing the project is nearly halfway funded on Kickstarter. Those wishing to know more about the project can visit the Kickstarter page HERE.
