Original Anchorman Story Was Very Different, According to Will Ferrell

Anchorman

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy was released back in 2004 as a strange, loony film featuring Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell, and more. It was a fun romp through San Diego in the 70’s, however the story wasn’t always going to be that way. According to Will Ferrell, the movie was originally supposed to be a lot darker, but the idea was rejected 10 times in a single day – perhaps that was for the best.

While making a guest appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Ferrell gave details on an earlier and darker Anchorman which would have essentially been the hilarious equivalent of Alive. It would have been set in 1976 and featured the crew flying to Philadelphia in order to celebrate the Bicentennial. Burgundy and company would have been on their way to a convention for the event, however, things would have taken a nasty turn.

Ron convinces the pilot that he knows how to fly the charter jet, and he immediately crash-lands it in the mountains. And it’s just the story of them surviving and trying to get off the mountainside. They clipped a cargo plane, and the cargo plane crashed as well, close to them, and it was carrying only boxes of orangutans and Chinese throwing stars. So throughout the movie we’re being stalked by orangutans who are killing, one by one, the team off with throwing stars.”

Fans didn’t get to see this original concept for Anchorman, but it all worked out for fans of the film. On the other hand, it could have been quite enjoyable to watch Ferrell and friends being chased by orangutans.
