Who will be The Batman? That seems to be the number one question as of late. As rumors surround Matt Reeves’ upcoming film, it’s hard to decipher exactly who will be donning the famous cowl. Ben Affleck is the most recent actor to take on the role, but as the days go on, it appears less and less likely that he will continue dispensing justice. At least, he might not be in Reeves’ project.

Reeves recently appeared on The Business podcast to discuss a number of things, including The Batman. By the way Matt was using his words, it’s as if the upcoming movie will not be part of the DC Extended Universe, but a standalone film instead. Actually, he basically flat-out said exactly that.

Well, I have a vision for a way to do something with that character that feels like it resonates with me personally, and a perspective that can grow out into other things. When they [Warner Bros.] approached me, what they said was ‘look, it’s a standalone, it’s not part of the extended universe.’”

This, of course, simply meant that it would be its own project instead of being part of the bigger picture. However, given recent reports, it might mean something much more than that. In fact, it just might be that Affleck could be out as the Dark Knight. When The Hollywood Reporter spoke of the recently announced Joker and Harley Quinn movie, they also mentioned that The Batman is set in a different time and with a different lead role.

The new line, or possibly label, will allow for the making of movies that will stand apart and separate from those big-budget tentpoles. Matt Reeves’ The Batman, for example, is intended to not be connected to the Justice League universe but to be set in a different time period and star another actor.”

Seems pretty clear, right? Ben Affleck is out and an unnamed actor is in. Case closed. Well, not really. Since the time of writing the above, THR has removed the second part and updated it, saying, “An earlier version of this story stated that Matt Reeves’ The Batman was part of Warner Bros.’ new label and would star a new actor as Batman, but it is unclear where that project will fall.” You know who we need to solve this mystery? Batman.
