Trouble in Development Stalls Work on Terraria Spin-Off Otherworld
Fans of Terraria expecting progress on Otherworld will be disappointed to know that Re-Logic has decided to start development over after trouble in development. With a long wait in silence, this was not the news fans were hoping for. The trouble is surprising, to say the least, however the company is taking it in stride as they move forward.
In 2016, Re-Logic made a forum post stating that Otherworld still needed a great deal of work, and rework, in order to get up to snuff. Following that announcement was the replacement of Engine’s art and design leads. With half a year passing and still no news, it is an unexpected development to discover that Re-Logic is dumping Engine Software for a complete do-over. The creator’s statement packs a lot of integrity:
Our team had a clear vision for this game – one that we shared with all of you with much shared excitement – and, as much as we hate to say it (and in spite of all of the reforms we tried last year) – the current state of the game is still equal parts far from that vision and well behind schedule. – Come whatever may, quality is simply not something we are willing to compromise on to make a quick buck.”
Development has been handed over to Pipeworks and they did re-write work on the console and mobile versions of Terraria. The plan is to go over the game with a fine-toothed comb to meet their vision and quality standards. Fans were also warned in Re-Logic’s last post that there will be a lengthy moment of silence as they work setting things right.
It may be painful in the short term, but our sincere hope is that it will pay off for everyone in the long term. Clearly, had we known this would be the scenario way back then, we would have held off on announcing the game until a later time – but such is game development. That said, we are really happy and confident with the new team and new plan – and cannot wait to get back on track.”
The culprit, according to 2D artist Simon Butler doing a panel interview at the Center for Computing History, was mismanagement. Given the talks of troubled development, Butler’s words make sense. It is sad, however, that they were treated this way though excitement looms as Re-Logic shows dedication in the face of adversity.
