Final Fantasy VII Remake’s Sephiroth Was Inspired By The Movie Jaws
It looks like Square Enix took its inspiration from some of the most unlikely of places when working on the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake. Out next month, the remake itself is a bit of a “make or break” situation for the Japanese publisher, though if the rest of the game is as good as the demo, then the future of Final Fantasy is in good hands. Now, it has been revealed that the character Sephiroth – who is mostly absent from the demo, of course – was partly inspired by the movie Jaws, of all things.
In a recent interview with AEW’s Kenny Omega, Final Fantasy VII Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase – who also worked as director for the original game – spoke about the inspiration for Sephiroth, and why part of it came from Jaws. Yes, that’s the one with the shark. “I wanted Sephiroth to be not so much of a physical villain, more of an unknown threat that people only heard rumors about,” Kitase said. “Not many people had seen him, but the fear could be felt from the rumors of his existence. I drew a lot of inspiration from the movie Jaws. It was a shark movie, but you never saw the shark until long into the movie.”
Rather than seeing the threat, knowing, and hearing of the threat was appealing to me, and I drew from this. Sephiroth is not present in the beginning of the game but you hear his rumors and fear him.”
How this is portrayed in the remake should be interesting to see. Maybe Sephiroth should get his own “dun-dun” music? Thankfully it won’t be too much longer of a wait, as the Final Fantasy VII Remake is slated to release exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020.
