Every ‘The Outer Worlds’ NPC Can Be Killed
Most players like to play Fallout or Elder Scrolls games by playing through the dense main and side quests, befriending NPCs, and bringing companions on excellent adventures. Other players like to walk from town to town, murdering anything that moves. If you’re the former or the latter, The Outer Worlds will have you covered. Obsidian Entertainment, developers of the beloved Fallout: New Vegas, have programmed their new game to be compatible with the most murderous players out there. Senior Designer Brian Heins talked about the difficulties of making this a possibility in an interview with Polygon.
Anyone you see, you can kill, [so] there’s got to be a way to get whatever they were going to give you, whether it’s a terminal entry or you can loot something off of their body or there’s a chest in their office that you would now lock-pick to get the information from. We gotta start figuring out all of those.”
The rest of the interview is quite fascinating. Heins makes the ability to kill every character in the game sound like a delicate balancing act, like a house of cards on a lazy susan. There are additional lines of dialog that go into NPCs recognizing that you’ve killed someone, and as such there are many factors and design decisions that had to be made to account for every possible scenario. If this level of detail has been applied to every facet of the game, The Outer Worlds is sure to be something special.
