Write Your Own Philosophical Story with the Game ‘Elegy for a Dead World’

elegy

This unique game named Elegy for a Dead World doesn’t actually contain any “games”, but is more of an outlet for your creativity and curiosity. In this game, you explore 3 dead civilizations and take notes about what you think happened and about everything you see there. You are essentially writing a story that you can then share with other players and read their stories in return. In these worlds are gorgeous scenes filled with color and remnants of past civilizations. The music that plays was inspired by Lord Byron’s Darkness, Percy Shelley’s Ozymandias, and John Keats’ When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be. These songs inspire you to delve into your inner self and pull out anything you can imagine into words.

In 2013 Dejobaan Games and Popcannibal collaborated on what would become Elegy for a Dead World which is available on Windows, Mac, Linux on Steam. According to Ziba Scott, co-creator,

“We have three great romantic poets- Shelley, Byron, and Keats- and they each wrote these really moving poems about end times, the end of the world. So, we get this really good, brooding feel of where man’s place on Earth is, and it really sets the tone for writing.”

Elegy for a Dead World helps you write with different prompts and challenges like fill in the blank type of examples to get your creative juices flowing. There are 27 writing challenges asking you for things like songs, poems, and short stories. Each story has different circumstances. In one you are an archaeologist, in another a thief. Eventually you can even delete the prompts all together and have complete freedom to write what you like. Here is a teaser trailer for the game below:
